Free Chinese language service for patients: Patients attending any Vision Eye Institute clinic in Sydney can access a liaison officer, Yee Siew Lim (Lim), who can assist with Mandarin, Cantonese and Malay language requirements. Our clinic diagnoses and treats a range of eye conditions – some of which are described below. After your consultation, an orthoptist is available to answer any additional questions you have about your condition and the treatment plan or vision correction procedure that your doctor has advised, so that you can make an informed decision about your eye care.
With the advancements in technology, we can now help the majority of people who wear glasses with some form of vision correction procedure – even if you’ve previously been told you don’t qualify. Many of our doctors specialise in laser eye surgery, including LASIK, SMILE, ASLA/PRK and refractive lens exchange or lens implant.
At the initial assessment consultation, we’ll carefully check your eyes to determine if you are suitable for vision correction and, if so, which procedure is most appropriate for you. As with any surgery, there are benefits and risks and your surgeon will discuss these with you.
Laser eye surgery procedures are performed in our dedicated laser suite at Chatswood. All other vision correction procedures are performed at the Chatswood Day Surgery.
If you live outside Sydney, we can often arrange for your initial assessment and laser eye surgery procedure to be performed on the same day (as long as you meet the necessary surgical criteria). We can also help organise local accommodation.

During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens of the eye is replaced with an artificial one. Traditionally, the entire operation was performed manually, but now surgeons can use laser technology to perform some of the steps. Our cataract surgeons were some of the first surgeons in Australia to perform laser cataract surgery and are highly experienced in both techniques. There are a variety of replacement lens options available, and your doctor will help you decide on the lens type that best suits your vision and lifestyle needs. Cataract surgery is performed as a day-surgery procedure.
We cater for all patients with retinal conditions – e.g. age-related macular degeneration, epiretinal membrane and macular hole, diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment. Eye drops are used to dilate your pupil so that we can examine the back of your eye, where the retina is. Your vision will be blurry and you will have increased sensitivity to glare – this should subside within 4 to 6 hours. Please note that you will not be able to drive home and will need to make other arrangements.
Treatments such as eye injections or laser therapy (which is different to laser eye surgery) may be performed on the same day, depending on the level of urgency. Retinal laser treatment is performed in the consultation room, and involves little or no discomfort. Patients requiring retinal surgery will have their procedure in a day surgery.
Glaucoma is a common condition that can gradually lead to permanent sight loss, but there are a number of treatment options that can stop or slow the condition from worsening. For most people, regular use of medicated eye drops is sufficient. If additional treatments are necessary, our glaucoma specialists can perform laser treatment and surgery to reduce pressure inside the eye.
Laser procedures for glaucoma (e.g. selective laser trabeculoplasty and laser peripheral iridotomy) are performed in the clinic, and are painless and quick. Surgical procedures (e.g. filtration surgery and MIGS/iStent) are performed under a local anaesthetic in a day surgery.
Our corneal specialists are highly experienced in treating conditions such as keratoconus, corneal dystrophies, pterygium and corneal ulcers. Treatment for corneal conditions can involve one or more complex procedures including corneal transplantation, pterygium removal, corneal ring implants and collagen cross-linking.
We perform comprehensive examinations to diagnose and treat a range of conditions that affect the brain and nervous system. These conditions include myasthenia gravis, brain tumours and strokes, giant cell arteritis, thyroid eye disease, optic neuritis, idiopathic intracranial hypertension and multiple sclerosis (MS). Treatment will depend on your specific condition.
These include YAG capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification following cataract surgery.
